Wailea Tennis Club Professionals

Patrik Ekstrand

Director of Tennis & Teaching Professional USPTA

Patrik grew up in Sweden and started playing tennis at the age of 8. He was continually ranked in the top 10 as a junior, with his highest ranking at number 2. He won the National Singles Title twice as a junior in Sweden as well as the European Championships twice.

At age 19, Patrik relocated to El Paso, Texas, where he played four years at the University of Texas at El Paso as their #1 singles player. Following college and the completion of two degrees, Patrik spent the next 15 years as the Head Pro at Tennis West Sports and Racquet Club in El Paso. During his time in El Paso, he worked with juniors, adults, USTA teams, and developed three players who reached a top 10 national ranking in juniors, with various titles in both singles and doubles.

In 2008, Patrik moved back to his native Sweden and continued in the coaching field. He divided his time between the Head Pro/Coach at his native club in Lund, and the Head Coach of EuroElite Junior Tennis Concepts, where he organized camps and ITF tours for competitive juniors. He has coached players to top ten national junior rankings in both Sweden and the U.S.

Patrik is a strong believer in teaching juniors the game correctly from the very beginning. Whereas it is important for the kids to have fun on the court while practicing, nothing is more fun than winning and continued improvement. Hence, Patrik always emphasizes the need to learn the correct grips, swings and movement at an early age. He approaches adult and recreational tennis slightly differently since it is decidedly more difficult to mold a mature person into learning a grip or stroke that has never been taught before. There are always avenues to take to improve a player’s game, even if it is just a subtle change!

Following a season as a teaching professional at the Wailea Tennis Club from October 2012 to April 2013, Patrik returned as the Director of Tennis in September 2013.
