ALOHA MEMBERS

April was a super busy month for the club. Along with spring break happening for about 4 weeks we also had some repair work done to the ceilings in the back offices. Our Head Teaching Professional Neil Archer had hernia surgery on April 21st. It went extremely well. The procedure will keep Neil off the court for about 4 to 6 weeks. And the weather has really changed. I am sure everyone has noticed how hot it is getting even in the early hours of the day.

Starting Sunday May 1st we will be opening at 7:00am. We will be closing at out our normal time of 12:00 and reopening at 3:00 and closing at 6:00 weekdays. Weekends we will be open 7:00 to 3:00. We are going to be adding some clinics to our schedule at those earlier times those clinics will be announced soon.

Our Newest addition to our teaching staff Jack DeAndrade will be leaving us mid to late May for his new assignment with PBI in North Carolina. Please refer to his segment of the newsletter. He has written a great letter to all of us. It was great to work with such a positive person and very strong tennis teaching professional. If it were my choice I would love to keep him here. He was a great addition to our club. Thank you Jack for everything you have brought to the club. There will be a going away party for Jack; I will let you all know where and when.

The 27th Wailea Open is Memorial Day Weekend. We are all very excited about this year's event. The applications are in the pro-shop.

We will have a junior camp this summer…..more information to follow. Coach Neil and Tyler will be running the camp.

    CLUB FUN

Aloha Wailea Club Members and Maui Tennis Players,

Last month life took an interesting turn for me. While teaching a clinic at the club, I experienced an inguinal hernia. Unable to continue teaching at the club on a "Light Duty" status, I had to cancel the Junior Programs and go on disability leave. I had surgery as soon as was possible, April 21st, I will return as soon as my doctor clears me physically. In the mean time, as I recover, I am able to do some video taping and review. If you would like me to video your practice, team practice or match play, please give me a call and set up a specific time and place (808 463-4440). Hopefully, I will be back to full duty in June. I am planning Junior Summer Camps and after summer school programs. Also there will be a bit more time in the evening to hit before dark so I will be available early evenings for hits and lessons. I feel a big summer of tennis heading our way and I want to help everyone get ready for it, so let’s get some game improvement going on in June!!

Mahalo, to all of you for your kind thoughts and prayers during these tough times for me and my family. I hope to see you all soon at the club.

See you on the courts, Aloha
    Coach Neil Archer

    FAREWELL

    Dear Maui friends,
It looks like the DeAndrade clan is on its way to South Carolina!

PBI has been hired by the Cliffs Communities in North and South Carolina. I will be the PBI tennis director for all of the Cliffs Communities. These are 6 planned communities around Lake Keowee and between Asheville, North Carolina and Greenville, South Carolina. I will be the tennis director for: The Cliffs at Keowee Vineyards, The Cliffs at Keowee Springs, The Cliffs at Keowee Falls South, Cliffs Valley, The Cliffs at Glassy and the Cliffs at Walnut Cove. Sounds pretty hectic I know but many of them are emerging communities. We will have to see how busy each of the sites are, and create tennis programming for them. I might put some miles on the Ferrari as I zip from site to site, or maybe just go to work by boat!

I wanted to write and say how happy myself, and my family, have been here on Maui. The Makena Tennis Club was a perfect spot for us and I want to thank the members and guests for accepting us into their homes and hearts for the 7 years we were here. I knew from the moment I arrived at MTC that we had something special and unique. What a wonderful atmosphere we had at the Makena Tennis Club! I can only hope to experience that type of ‘family’ again in the future.

I would be remiss if I did not mention how much I enjoyed working with everyone that helped out at MTC. Paul, Ben, Julie, Steve, Jason and Misa were all so helpful over the years. Do you realize that Paul has never been late nor absent in over 6 years! I can honestly say I had fun everyday working with that gang and the crazy, fun members too!

I also want to thank Cathy and her crew at the Wailea Tennis Club for welcoming me as a 4th tennis professional these last few months. Cathy, Sarah, Neil, Scott, RW, Tyler and Ricky could not have been more supportive and friendly. Thanks to the Wailea Tennis Club and to the WTC members for allowing me to rehabilitate my shoulder and coach a bit at the same time. These last few months have really been fun.

Zayn has literally grown up on Maui and I want to thank everyone for their support of her tennis by hitting, playing and coaching her, thank you. I remember Zayn at MTC climbing the light poles in the parking lot and walking along the top of the fences. Now, she is soon to be in junior high and playing in adult tennis events!

Miwako and I have enjoyed Maui so much that we purchased a home here. We will certainly keep our little condo and hopefully come back to Maui to live in the future. It will be hard to leave this beautiful spot and our little home but the cool thing about PBI is that all of our sites are beautiful. The Cliffs Communities are high in the Blue Ridge Mountains and arguably as pretty as Maui, albeit a mountain paradise instead of an island paradise. I will say one thing though, the mountains of North and South Carolina will have 4 seasons and I’m pretty sure one of those is the brrrrr season!

Thank you Maui tennis players for your support and dedication to tennis and the support of your clubs and coaches. I cannot thank enough all of the members and guests who have supported my endeavors throughout the years and I really hope we can remain friends and stay in touch.

    Your friend,

    Jack DeAndrade
