ALOHA MEMBERS
As I am sure you have noticed there are quite a few changes going on. We are transitioning from how we were operating internally.
These changes have made it much easier for us to perform. I have a new Pro Shop manager, Sarah Mitalovich, who has added so
much to our operation with all of her retail background. We also have a new clerk stringer, Erin Rowe, that comes to us loaded
with sales experience. And you all know RW, who is part of our Wailea Tennis Club Foundation of Customer Service.
In February, we will be adding another new face behind the counter
I am having the opening staff come in at 7:15am to begin their opening routine so that we can make sure everything is ready
for members and guests by 7:55am. The doors will not open until that time. They were coming in at 7:30am due to budget restrictions
and it has become obvious we cannot get everything done in 30 minutes, so we have made the adjustment.
Sorry for any inconvience this has caused any of you. Please understand they need that amount of time to set up and
can't stop and let anyone in earlier than that.
These changes have already made us efficient and we can give more organized customer service. Here are the areas we are concentrating on.
1. Member Blocks of Courts
2. Member Dues Collections
3. Individual Member Court Bookings
4. Member Clinics
5. Member Events
6. Members Etiquette towards the staff and towards each other
7. Lesson Courts
8. Ball Machine
9. Use of the courts when the shop is closed
Member Blocks of Courts:
Any Member that wants a block of courts booked for a round robin or event or team workout needs to contact Sarah.
She will make sure your courts are booked based upon availability. That is the only time we will book out month to month.
Member Dues Collection:
Yearly members have two options on payment. Either pay for the whole year or have your monthly payments automatically taken
out of your bank accounts.
Monthly members will pay for the months they are here. Either month-to -onth or all upfront. We do not pro-rate monthly
membership in order to avoid bookkeeping confusion.
Individual Member Court Bookings:
First come, first serve. Please do not expect the staff to know what court is your favorite court. Everyone has the right to call in
and book a court. Everyone can ask for a specific court. But it is not guaranteed. Your membership gives you the privilege to
book 7days in advance as opposed to a non-member that is restricked to 5 days in advance.
You are more than welcome to request a specific court but due to clinics, pre-arranged team practices, team events, or lessons,
we can not guarantee you will get that court.
As always, we will reserve for you the best court possible over a non-member, but it may not be your favorite.
Member Clinics:
In February, the clinics will no longer be free. We did not get the participation we were hoping for on Tuesday and Thursday at 9:00am.
Perhaps you could give us some feedback on the time and day for these clinics.
We would like to move forward with special clinics that would benefit our members.
Member Events:
Our next upcoming event will be the Tony VanSteen Valentines
Weekend Doubles Tournament. Please get your applications at the Pro-Shop or on apply online on our Club website
at www.waileatennis.com. Harriet VanSteen will try to make an appearance.
She is very ill with cancer and is not doing well.
Please come out and support this event. We are going to do a special presentation just for her.
Membership Etiquette towards the Staff and each other:
The Staff is here to help you in anyway they can and they have my full support. They all know how the operation is run.
There are two Managers here. The Pro-Shop Manager, Sarah Mitalovich, and myself, the Director. If you have a problem
with anything, please feel free to talk to either one of us. Please treat the Staff with respect. Each day
they come into the shop, they are dealing with what is in front of them, the court sheet. We are aware that mistakes do
happen. We ask that you please be patient while my Staff finds a solution for you.
All Member's are entitled to play 1.5 hours on the courts per day. Once the allotted time is over and another party
is scheduled on that court, finish the point (not the game or set) and relinquish the court to the new players.
It doesn't matter whether if it is a member or a visitor that is waiting for the court. If you would like more time to complete
your game or match, talk to the Staff in the Pro Shop. They will check the court sheets to see if there is another court available.
Do not assume that a court that appears not being used is available. Your assumption can and will cause great confusion.
My Staff will send players to a court that shows 'available' on the court sheets only to have those players return to them
stating that there are people on that court. It is also important that you play on the court that has been assigned to you by my Staff or the same
confusion will ensue.
Please be courteous and adhere to "Court Etiquette" to your fellow members and visitors that use our facility.
Lesson Courts:
We currently have 3 teaching professionals on staff. Each Pro needs a
court to teach on. Court 1, Court 9 and Stadium are the designated teaching courts. Each Pro has a shed
nearby that houses their teaching equipment. We have done it this way so as not to distract anyone from their own game or match.
There will be times we have to teach on other available courts due to special circumstances.
Ball Machine:
The Ball Machine is available to any member. You can book it for one hour each day. If no one comes to use it
after your assigned hour, you may continue to use it, if you wish. Please put it away when you are done even if the court
sheets showed another player requesting it after your hour. That player may have canceled their reservation. There is a shed down there
for it. The Ball Machine can not be operated during the hours that the Pro Shop is closed. Our Parent
Company can not have someone operating a machine of any kind on the property unsupervised. We only have
electrical outlets on so many courts which is why it is located on court 2. We are looking in to other options.
Use of the Courts when the Shop is closed:
Members can play before we open in the morning, when we are closed from 12:00p-3:00p and after we close at night.
Only Members can book the lit courts. Our Pros also can book activities on them. Members can bring a
guest for free before 8:00am and between 12:00pm and 3:00pm. However, if that guest stays on the court past those times,
they must pay a guest fee.
From all of us, thank you for your time and understanding. We greatly appreciate your support and having you as part
of our family here at Wailea Tennis Club. As we continue to make changes in order to better service you, we realize
questions may arise. Feel free to Email, call or stop in and talk to Sarah or myself.

IT'S 2010
Aloha everyone, it looks like a wonderful start to 2010. The weather has been beautiful and the courts have been full.
I see loads of tennis being played by our members and am happy to be a part of such an awesome group of tennis
enthusiasts here at the Wailea Tennis Club. I hope that you all will take advantage of the “member only” clinics that
have been set up just for you. Free in February, if you have the time and energy come in and learn something new: a
stroke, strategy, or way to practice. You never know what you might get out of one of our great clinics.
Speaking of good tennis the Australian Open sure gave us some incredible tennis to watch. Some old names and a
few new ones but the tennis is consistently great these days.
Tip of the month: Want to improve on your volley? Try adding a bit of slice to the racquet head movement of your volley.
Start a bit higher than the ball and cut through the ball as you move the racquet forward. A small change can go a
long way toward improving your tennis strokes.
See you on the courts, Aloha Coach Neil Archer

JULIA WEISEL
It is great to all of our part time members around the club again, welcome home!!
With all of us wanting to play so much tennis here, I realized we all have the feeling of a shortage of courts.
Thank you for your understanding and kokua for sharing the courts. The people working in shop are doing a great job at juggling all of us.
Please let them know this. Thank you!!!
This month I would like to tell about one of our junior champions at the Club. I am sure that most of you have seen me
hitting with a young girl that always seems to be beating me up on the court.
Her name is Julia Weisel.
She just turned 14 years old and lives in Kihei. Maui has been her home from the start. Julia started playing at Wailea
in our junior program when she was around 8 years old. She relocated to the Paia Country Club with Chris Lovell,
whom I am sure that many of you remember. About five months ago, Julia decided to come back to Wailea to train,
and train is what she does!!! We practice on the court about 7 hours a week. We put in about 2 1/2 hrs a week doing footwork
drills on the court too!! If that is not enough, you will find us on the beach, twice a week, running on the sand for a couple of hours!!!
She is Killing me!! Sounds like a lot of work. Well with her goal of playing on the tour, it is just the beginning. Currently, Julia is the
top player in her age group in Hawaii and is ranked in the 70's nationally. She is traveling to the mainland almost every month to
play national tournaments (thank you mom and dad!!). The next one is in February in Florida on clay courts. Good luck Julia!!!!
So the next time that you see me walking a little slow or looking a little stiff, you all know why.....I am just trying to keep up with Julia Weisel!!!!
See you on the courts!!!!
Aloha and A Hui Hou!!!! Coach Scott Lechuga-DiSalvo
